Liberty is celebrated far more often than it is examined. These papers step back from today’s headlines to ask the enduring questions every free people must eventually answer.

Rather than beginning with parties, policies, or personalities, they begin with first principles: What is government for? Why should it be limited? What duties belong to citizens? What institutions best preserve a free society?

If we hope to preserve liberty, we must first understand it.
